Windy, Windy West

A cold front blew through last night, and the forecast at Williston, ND, calls for winds out of the west at 24 mph gusting to 35. That ought to make for some stellar gas mileage. :-(

Before I headed out of Minot, I stopped at the Scandinavian Heritage Park. Definitely a worthwhile stop!

Since I got on the road at a decent time, I decided to just go all the way to Ralston instead of spending the night in Havre, MT. I crossed the border at White Horse. There are 43 miles of nothing between Havre and the border, and then 70 more miles of nothing from the border to the TransCan. Yeah, Elkwater is in there somewhere, but it's off the highway a bit.

Tooling Across MN and ND

Today, I visited the fabulous Munsinger Clemens Gardens in St. Cloud, MN. It's located next to the Mississippi.

I lunched at Old Broadway in downtown Fargo, ND. I sat at the near end of the bar in the top picture on the website's main page.

My last tourist adventure was stopping in Rugby, ND, to see the Northern Lights tower and the marker for the geographical center of North America. I'd have lingered a little longer in each location were it not for the thunderstorm rolling in.

I don't count it as a tourist stop, but I made a short detour to Evansville, MN, just because of the name. It's pretty tiny.

I've stopped in Minot, ND, for the night and will probably spend tomorrow night in Havre, MT.

Workout

August 21
7:34 a.m. CT
Warm up: ~.25 mile walk
Distance: 3.45 miles
Duration: 37:05
Pace ave: 10:44
HR ave 144, max 161
Cool down: ~.25 mile walk
@start: 63, 90%, fair, SE@7
@end: 66, 84%, fair, SSE@8

Another good run. I didn't feel quite as good as yesterday morning, but it was still decent. It wasn't a very scenic route through a couple business parks, but the roads were good and the traffic was light aside from right near the main road to the interstate. Having a decent breeze blowing makes it so much better to run. Also, it was nice just doing a shorter run.

Food

Pre-Run: n/a
Breakfast: 8:25 a.m. boiled egg, Danimals Strawberry Explosion yogurt (ok, so that's what the hotel offered aside from Trix yogurt), clementines.
Snack: 12:30 p.m. fudge, apple, Diet Coke.
Lunch: 3:30 p.m. 1 Moose Drool brown ale, salad - baby spinach, strawberries, feta, candied pecans, grilled chicken breast, bread, a bit of butter and a smidgen of raspberry vinaigrette.
Afternoon Snack: 5:30 p.m. Sweet Tarts.
Supper: 9:45 p.m. green grapes, 1.5 oz almonds.
Evening Snack: n/a

Yesterday, I managed to rationalize the Corn Nuts because this Saturday is the next "trip to the farrier" day which I'm obviously not going to make; therefore, since farrier day is also Corn Nuts day, I substituted yesterday as Corn Nuts day. :-) They were yummy.

In general, a road trip, especially a long one, means I get a strawberry shake from McDonald's. Just a small one, though, but not today as it turns out.

Day 3: PM

This day certainly didn't go the way I figured it would. From a fasting perspective, it was fine. I was too busy putting 100+ miles on my car driving all sorts of back roads in Gibson County looking for my granddad to be thinking about eating. I think half the county was out looking for him. Turns out he somehow became disoriented when heading back to Princeton from the farm (which is north of Princeton) and ended up in Evansville (30 miles south). After apparently spending a large amount of time driving around Evansville, when he came to US 41, he went south instead of north. And he kept going south. All the way to Hopkinsville, KY which is about 120 miles south of Princeton. FInally he stopped at a gas station & told the guy there that he was lost. That kind soul called my grandparents' house (I'd just arrived there after driving all over)and told my aunt that Granddad was ok and gave her the details. To shorten the story, the prodigal grandfather has returned safe & sound. My aunt & I are going to get the truck tomorrow. The other aunt was on her way up from Franklin, KY to help look. She was able to detour to pick him up and bring him home. She's headed back home in the morning and will drop the first aunt and I off in Hopkinsville to drive the truck home. I'm just glad he's ok.

Whew! What a day! Little did I know when I left my house at 10 this morning that it would be after 8 when I returned.

The fasting is going well. I seem to have more energy and strength today than yesterday, and food hasn't been constantly on my mind. I did have another eating food dream last night, though, and the popcorn that aunt #1 popped while I went to my mom's to feed the cat and clean the pool sure smelled good when I walked back into my grandparents' house. I suspect the increase in energy is because my body has now converted to burning fatty acids in order to preserve as much protein as it can. The brain still requires glucose, though, so some protein will be used to make the glucose. I expect my body fat % to start to drop a little now over however many days I end up fasting.

Also, the headache is gone again. My parents return tomorrow night, so there's only one more day of plant/pool/kitty duty. Yay!
