Race Day
Pre-race: I slept really well last night & ate my regular breakfast of fruit and almonds around 6 a.m.
I picked up my race number today instead of going down yesterday afternoon to do it.
The best bit is the weather: a good 15 degrees cooler than last year!
Post-race: I didn't set any a, b, or c goals for the race. As I was driving down, I figured doing the race in less than 1:05 would be good progress for me and would be achievable. My time last year in the horrid heat was 1:16:14, and I walked a lot. This year, I didn't walk except for about 15 paces at the second water stop. My ankle didn't bother me at all during the race. The clouds started breaking up as the race started. It was warm at the end with all the sunshine, but it wasn't oppressive by any stretch of the imagination.
I came in 411 out of 757 at 1:02:16 which was a 10:02 pace. Woohoo! My watch time was 4 seconds faster. I'm pretty darn happy with the result, even though I know I can eventually do a lot better.
The top five female times in my age group (40-44) were from 47:03 to 50:53. Two of the women walkers beat me, though. Bummer. I also managed to finish faster than the 85 year old guy (1:08:07), again: way to go Harold!! The oldest female runner today was 72 (1:25:12).
